Chapter 24

Valued Friends

As they drove back to New York, Buck didn’t have time to think about his own safety. He was too busy reliving the old feeling of resentment. Angela’s death had left him angry and bitter with the two people he trusted most. Oftentimes, he believed that those two men were betraying him, but he would just as easily accept the thought as paranoia. Now he knew for sure that Chaka didn’t care about Buck or his ability to be a friend, and the madness began again.

Could Q have been a part of the plan to set him up? Just as the thought rolled around in his head, he began to have trouble breathing. Quinton sat in the driver’s seat while Buck, in the passenger’s seat, seemed to be hyperventilating. Quinton navigated the truck to the shoulder of the road to check on his friend.

As the car pulled slowly to a stop, Buck raised his head. There was no question, something was torturing Buck. His eyes were red, and his chest was heaving.

Q tried to make his voice light, in case Buck was angry with him. “You all right, man? You seem to be having trouble over there.”

Buck turned his glare to Quinton, as if seeing him for the very first time.

“Nah, nigga, I ain’t all right. You let me go to jail for some shit we were all down with. You and that sorry son of a bitch used me to take the fall. I lost everything that year—my chance at life, a decent girl, my freedom, and more importantly, I destroyed my grandma’s dreams for me.”

Q allowed Buck to air out his anger, hoping that when it was time to defend his actions, Buck would believe him. But he lost his patience just as Buck got to Ms. Sadie.

“I wonder if she was down with the plan to fuck me over—the stupid football star— because she didn’t think I was worth anything.”

“Yo, Jahson, you reaching now. Chaka did some fucked-up shit, and I’m as angry as you are, but I wonder how else he used us all. But if you asking me whether I knew about the plan to send you up, my answer is emphatically no. I would not have gone along with that shit, and I hope all these years as friends have proved that to you. Granted, we were all guilty, but I like to think, had things worked out differently, I could have dealt with my punishment.”

Buck lost control of his emotions. He leaped from the truck and slammed the door.

Quinton recognized Buck’s frustration, but was helpless to make things better. For his fallen friend, he harbored a new sense of pity. Chaka must have been desperate, to use his oldest friend just to fill his greed. Buck had always been the most loyal of them all, and he’d proved it every time one of them needed him. It didn’t matter if it was in the middle of the night for bullshit or if it was real beef.
